The Head of Public Service and Secretary to the cabinet John Mitala has interdicted the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Dr Rose Nassali.
Nassali is currently battling a corruption case at the Anti-Corruption Court.
She was on August 8,charged in Court over accusations of causing a financial loss to government after she allegedly paid Shs33.8 million to a consulting firm arbitrarily.
The charges arose from her work at the Education ministry, where she had worked prior to joining the JSC.
In a letter dated October 11, Mitala informed Dr. Nassali that the Inspector General of Government had directed him to suspend her from performing any duties until prosecution is concluded.
“Arising out of the criminal case No. CO-0107-2019 under which you are being prosecuted before the Anti-Corruption Court, the Inspector General of Government has directed that you be suspended/interdicted immediately from performing the functions of your office until the prosecution is concluded,” Mitala said.
Adding, “The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to interdict you with immediate effect from the duties and functions at your office as directed in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Uganda Public Service Standing orders 2010.”
Early this week, Dr Nassali defied Justice Minister Kahinda Otafiire’s order stopping her from resuming her work. She reported for duty on Monday.
On October 4,2019, Otafiire to the chairperson of JSC, Justice Benjamin Kabiito, directing him not to allow Dr Nassali to resume duties pending consultations with President Museveni.
“In this regard, as requested in your letter, I am once again taking up the matter with the appointing authority. In the meantime, I advise that in addition to measures you have already taken, you communicate to Dr Nassali to inform her that she cannot assume office in the JSC in view of the fact that she has a pending criminal trial and that her appointment letter does not indicate the JSC as the place of her deployment,” Otafiire stated.
