The body of a 10-year-old girl, Gloria Babeli, who went missing on Wednesday from her home in Busoro sub-county, Kabarole district has been found dumped in a swamp.
According to Rwenzori West police spokesperson, Lydia Tumushabe, Babeli a P.4 pupil at Ngombe primary school left home in Ngombe village at around 3 pm to go and fetch water from a nearby stream but never returned.
Babeli’s grandfather, Christopher Mugenyi, whom she had left home, decided to ask residents in the area to help him search for his granddaughter.
The search reportedly went on throughout the night until Babeli’s body was found dumped in a swamp on Thursday morning by the residents. The swamp is about 300 metres from the stream where the girl had gone to fetch water.
Tumushabe says that this was a deliberate action by the assailants who, from police’s initial findings, first raped her and then strangled her to death. Mugenyi says he has been living with the girl after her parents separated many years ago.
