Police in Rukungiri district is investigating circumstances under which a Ugandan fisherman was shot dead by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) game rangers while ‘fishing illegally’.
It is alleged that on Friday, September 20, Kenneth Akampurira, 36 of Rushaya cell, Bwambara parish sub county, Rukungiri district left home with three friends Bahama, Johnson and Kilimanjaro Dickson at about 10:00 hours to fish in River Ntugwa, Queen Elizabeth National Park.
While there, the rangers armed with rifles sighted them carrying out illegal fishing and fired at them. Unfortunately, a bullet landed on Akampurira’s head, killing him instantly as his friends scampered for dear life.
They then camped at Rweshama landing site and waited for him but all in vain.
The deceased’s body was discovered floating over the river on Monday, according to the Kigezi police spokesperson Elly Maate.
“it’s on Monday 23/9/2019 that other fishermen while in their normal fishing routine recovered his body floating on water and reported to the area chairperson, Wasabi Kenneth who reported to police,” Maate said.
