An employee of the East Africa Natural Resources Limited is fighting for his life at Mbarara regional hospital after taking poison following the murder of his 28-year-old girlfriend.
Morris Warugaba is said to have killed Christine Niwamanya on Monday inside a canteen which serves Ntungamo Magistrate’s court and the district headquarters.
Her lifeless body was discovered by a customer.
Police say after strangling Niwamanya to death, Warugaba allegedly took poison but was rescued before he died, leaving behind a note saying he killed her because their love had gone bad.
“Investigations are underway to find out what exactly caused the death her death. Warugaba wanted to commit suicide by poison but was rescued and taken to a clinic and later transferred to Mbarara regional hospital,” Damian Katwesiime, the Ntungamo District police commander said.
According to witnesses, Warugaba left his office which deals in minerals and went to the canteen where Niwamanya was. He later walked back to his office where he worked as a laboratory assistant.
Thirty minutes later, a customer walked into the canteen to buy airtime only to get no response. She then entered the back room where Niwamanya stayed, only to find her restless body lying on the bed.
Mr Katwesiime says police is working with the employers of Mr Warugaba, to have him apprehended and charged with murder as they investigate circumstances leading to her death.
