Staff of Parliament have donated assorted items worth two million shillings to a 19 year old mother of triplets in Kayunga District.
Parliament is partnering with the Vision Group, under its flagship weekend paper, the Sunday Vision in this year’s 2019 Twin Festival on Sunday, 25 August 2019 at Namboole Stadium.
In the lead up to the event, a Corporate Social Responsibility activity was organised to support Jane Otuba, the mother of the triplets. Otuba’s plight was published in the New Vision newspaper which reported that she was abandoned by the father of the children and had been left to fend for the triplets.
A group of staff of Parliament, led by Mercy Nalusiba, Principal Assistant Editor of Hansard and Charles Bukuwa, Senior Information officer, visited the mother of the triplets, Jane Otuba, in Nyize village, Kangulumira parish in Kayunga District.
The staff handed over shs500,000 in cash as upkeep for the babies’ urgent needs, as well as other assorted items including a mattress, baby blankets, baby clothes, diapers and household items like sugar, washing and bathing soap.
The staff who are twins and parents to twins locally known as nalongos and salongos spearheaded the initiative which saw a great response in cash and materials items.
Speaking on behalf of Parliament, Bukuwa said Parliament was touched by Otuba’s plight and staff resolved, on short notice, to pull resources among themselves to help.
“Their condition is not pleasing so as staff, we decided to come together to contribute items and money to support the mother and babies,” Bukuwa said, adding that the support will not be a one-off event.
“We would like Ms Otuba to open up a bank account where we shall be depositing money on a monthly basis to keep supporting the triplets,” he added
Otuba who broke down in tears while receiving the items thanked Parliament and Vision Group for running to her aid revealing that she had been struggling to take care of the four-month old babies ever since she was abandoned by their father.
“I would like to thank you for helping me. God gave me a gift of these three children but I was not sure how I would support them. I am grateful to God for sending you to me,” Otuba said.
