At least 100 field workers of Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) attached to Kabale Branch are protesting non payment of their wages since March this year.
According to the disgruntled employees who talked to our reporter, mason workers signed an agreement of being paid Shs25000 daily while porters were to be paid Shs15000. They say that they have been in different districts doing the UNRA work including Kisoro, Rukungiri and Currently in Rukiga on renovation of Muhanga-Kamwezi road, but they have never received their wages.
Jonathan Niwandinda, a mason says that he started working in March and he signed an agreement with the authority of receiving his wages weekly but he has never received any pay. He said UNRA officials at the branch headquarters claim they were interrupted by closing of the financial year yet for them they receive their monthly salary.
“We are struggling to equip ourselves and families with the required basic needs because currently we are financially incapable,” said Niwandinda.
When we contacted Eng. Augustine Kabanda , the greater Kabale Branch manager of UNRA, he said that he does not handle such issues through the media and referred us to the UNRA spokesperson Mark Ssali. However the authority mouthpiece could not pick his known phone number.
