Mary Luwum has passed on at the age of 93.
Mary was the wife to former Archbishop of Uganda Janani Luwum.
She died on Tuesday at International Hospital Kampala where she had been diagnosed with adrenal cancer.
She outlived her husband, who died at the age of 55.
“My mother was full of life. She was a strong woman…You know I lost my father at around 8 years and all I can remember is leaning on my mother and taking me through different stages of life. She struggled bringing up her kids,” said Phoebe Luwum, a daughter of the deceased.
The Church of Uganda says she will be remembered as not being ashamed of the Gospel and as one who “supported her husband’s decision to not flee Uganda when threatened by then President Idi Amin”.
“That decision ultimately led to his martyrdom on February 16, 1977. In the 42 years following her husband’s assassination, she continued to dedicate her life to preaching the Gospel and supporting the social-economic growth of the Church of Uganda.
She is survived by seven children; four girls and three boys.
