Cabinet sitting today Monday 20th May chaired by President Yoweri Museveni has approved the formation and creation of five new regional cities.
Fort Portal, Mbarara, Jinja, Gulu and Arua are all cities, and they should be starting to operate in July 2020 as the first phase.
Fort Portal has been granted city status as a tourism city and will be planned and built around tour and Travel inspirations.
The rest are regional cities and by virtue of strategic interests and populations, they are expected to ease pressure on Kampala, which has been the city and capital of Uganda for more than 50 years.
Needless to say, Mbale has been left out in this city bonanza despite enjoying a regional influence in the the east as well as having a sizeable population.
