Buganda Road Court grade one Magistrate Esther Nahirya has remanded Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi to Luzira Prison for staging unlawful protest.
While reading the charges on Monday Nahirya, said Kyagulanyi, who is popularly known as Bobi Wine intentionally disobeyed the statutory duties of section 116 of the Penal Code Act, and staged public assemblies without adhering to the required criteria.
The state alleged that on July 11, 2018, Kyagulanyi together with others held a public meeting at City Square in Kampala without notifying police, leading him to break section 5 and 10 of the Public Order Management Act 2013.
Kyagulanyi was arrested on Monday on his way to Criminal Investigative Directorate (CID) office in Kibuli where he was summoned to answer queries in regards to the aftermath of his Kyarenga Extra Concert saga. The cancelled show was meant to happen on Easter Monday at One Love Beach, Busabala.
His lawyer Asuman Basalirwa however maintained that his client has been charged with protesting against the Over the Top Tax (OTT) social media and mobile money taxes last year in July. He added that they tried to secure bail for him.
“Unfortunately, the sureties were among the many people who were blocked by security from accessing court premises,” he said.
Kyagulanyi will return to court on May 2.
