Thieves on Easter Monday allegedly hacked into MTN Mobile Money system and withdrew over Shs100 million that belonged to customers.
Currently, the affected customers are demanding for refund from the country’s biggest telecom company.
According to sources, the network was first turned off by the criminals before diverting the money.
MTN Uganda speaks out
In a statement, the telecom management has said, “It has come to our attention that some of our customers have had their money fraudulently withdrawn from their Mobile Money accounts over the past weeks. Some questionable individuals have been obtaining PIN numbers from our customers under false pretence and subsequently withdrawing funds from their mobile Money accounts.”
The management has however assured its clients that the platform is safe and secure.
“MTN Mobile Money customers are urged not to share their PIN numbers with anyone to avoid exposure to fraudsters,” the management warned.
“We would like to assure the general public that MTNis committed to providing a safe and convenient Mobile Money experience to our customers.”
