The list of those who have shown interest contesting against President Yoweri Museveni in the next General Elections has increased by one person.
This after Democratic Party leader Norbert Mao on Tuesday made the announcement that he too will appear on the 2021 ballot paper. He joins People Power’s Robert Kyagulanyi, the Kyadondo East legislator who announced his intentions to unseat NRM’s Museveni, Uganda’s President for over 33 years two weeks ago.
Forum for Democratic Change’s Dr Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential aspirant is yet to publicly declare his intention.
But Mao’s announcement did come with a side show as he blasted ‘those who say he is again being backed by the incumbent to undermine opposition efforts,’ calling the Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi ‘reckless’ and ‘a less intelligent legislator.’
Kivumbi, a DP member had earlier on Monday allegedly attacked Mao’s personality while on nbs TV’s Morning Breeze programme, by saying the party president was being used by the ruling NRM party to weaken the opposition by contesting in the 2021 general election.
“I announced that I would seek the office of the president of Uganda when I was still in Senior Three at Namilyango College School and anyone who knows me has known that Norbert Mao will run for president and become president or die trying; therefore, whatever Muwanga Kivumbi said is not new,” Mao said Tuesday.
“Stupidity is not a crime, not even written anywhere in the Penal Code Act. If it was a crime, many people would be in prison. It is not even taxable; I wish there was a tax on stupidity, Uganda would be a very rich country. By insulting me, you’re putting me away from the negotiating table. What Muwanga Kivumbi said was extremely reckless and an insult to me. I even considered filing a case but then I realised that stupidity is not an offence; it’s not written anywhere in the Penal Code. If it was, many people would be in prison.”
But Kivumbi insisted that Mao was actually still a part of President Museveni project 2021.
“For this project to succeed, he intends to divide the Opposition and among the people he talked to and accepted is Mr Mao, …he agreed to run for president not that he can win but to be part,” he told local publication Daily Monitor.
