It was all jubilation on Monday evening at Kyankwanzi after President Museveni accepted the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Caucus’ resolution to front him for the 2021 presidential elections.
“I am therefore very pleased with your confidence in me and since am still very able and I happen to be among the most conversant with this journey, I happily agree to serve,” Mr Museveni told the MPs.
Upon hearing the news, the over 300 legislators hit the floor in song and dance, pulling off the kind of dance strokes that are bound to leave many professional dancers green with envy.
Earlier, the NRM members of parliament had endorsed the party’s central executive committee (CEC) resolution to have President Museveni as their sole candidate in the 2021 polls.
Last month, the NRM top decision making organ, CEC made the resolution at its retreat at Chobe Safari Lodge, Nwoya district.
The position by the NRM MPs was taken after a presentation by Justine Kasule Lumumba, the party secretary during an eight day retreat at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.
The retreat, opened on Friday by President Museveni, is also being attended by NRM leaning Independents, historicals and members of the CEC.
Don Wanyama, the Senior Presidential Press Secretary was quick to take to facebook to share the good news that the President had accepted to become the party’s sole candidate.
“Meanwhile, it was all dance and cheers in Kyankwanzi this afternoon after President Museveni accepted the NRM Caucus resolution to front him for the 2021 presidential elections and beyond,” he posted.
With the party set to continue well into the wee hours of the night, we have no choice but to bring you some of the photos as taken by PPU’s Abu Mwesigwa.
Updates to follow.
