The Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje has appointed Sheikh Sulaiman Lubega Guggwa as the Kampala regional Kadhi.
Sheikh Guggwa belongs to the Kibuli Muslim faction that was formed over 10 years ago when a group led by the late Sheikh Zubair Kayongo accused Mubajje of selling a number of Muslim property including plots 102 and 30 on William Street, and plot 12-16 on Port Bell road to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba. It is alleged that Basajjabalaba later sold the plots to fellow businessman Drake Lubega.
According to New Vision, Guggwa’s appointment has been confirmed by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Spokesperson Hajj Nsereko Mutumba.
“It is true that he has been appointed but he is yet to receive the confirmation letter,” said Mutumba.
However, a source who preferred anonymity says that Guggwa’s installation has been delayed because some Muslim leaders at the Old Kampala camp are opposed to his appointment for a number of reasons, including being a new entrant into UMSC administration structure.
Guggwa speaks out
The cleric says he is ready to take up the assignment once confirmed because leadership comes from God.
“I studied the Islamic religion to serve the Muslim community and I cannot turn down any opportunity to do so,” Guggwa told the local daily.
“I was informed about the development but I have not yet received the appointment letter.”
