A dfcu bank official is among the suspects being investigated over the recent foiled robbery at one of the bank’s branches in Bwaise along Apollo Kaggwa Road, Kampala.
According to police, the robbery is likely to have been planned by the bank official (name withheld) at the branch with the help of private security guards that were securing the facility by the time of the incident.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said working together with Securex, a private security firm, police on Tuesday conducted an operation and arrested four suspects including two guards who had abandoned their firearms and fled the scene hours after the foiled robbery.
Upon arrest, the suspects tipped the security operatives about the bank official’s role in the incident. They are currently being held at Wandegeya Police Station.
Early this month, four unidentified men armed with an AK47 rifle stormed the bank around 7pm as it was closing.
They reportedly ordered the three bank employees who were winding up the day’s business to lead them to the safe where cash is kept. They assaulted the trio demanding for the keys to the safe in vain.
In their statement to police, two of the employees, say the thugs raped their female colleague to compel her to surrender the key.
After failing to compel the employees to handover the key, the thugs reportedly tried to cut the safe without success. They left the bank around 10.20pm. Before leaving the bank, the thugs stormed the CCTV control room and disconnected the cameras. They reportedly made off with the monitor and Central Processing Unit (CPU) used to store CCTV footage.
Outside the bank, the robbers hijacked a Vitz belonging to one of the employees that was parked at the entrance.
