The Speaker of Parliament has tasked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martins Okoth Ochola to promote the traffic officer who was on Sunday assaulted by Maj General Matayo Kyaligonza and his bodyguards.
She says Sergeant Esther Namaganda should be appreciated for insisting on doing her job according to the law.
“I condemn the actions of Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza and his bodyguards of assaulting a traffic officer. I find this unacceptable and am glad that the Military Police arrested them. I call upon the IGP @OkothOchola1 to promote Sgt. Esther Namaganda for insisting on doing her job according to the law,” said Kadaga in a Facebook post on Monday.
In a video making rounds on social media, Kyaligonza and his men are seen manhandling Namaganda for allegedly stopping them from making a wrongful U-turn. It’s has been also reported that UBC journalist Peter Otai who caught the incident in Seeta, Mukono on camera was also assaulted by the military officers.
However, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has since apologised to its sister security body for the cruel action committed by its officers.
“We have been informed of the incident involving a Police traffic Sergeant and UPDF military Police Soldiers. It is very regrettable and apologies to our Police Sister.UPDF and UPF are establishing the facts .Findings will guide action to be taken,” said Brig Richard Karemire, the army spokesperson.
Adding, “We wish to inform the public that as investigations into circumstances that led to the Seeta incident continue, UPDF has arrested RA/221607 L/CPL Bushindiki Peter and RA/230927 Pte Okurut John Robert. They are now held at Military Police Hqs. We reiterate our commitment to ensuring discipline of all ranks.”
