The first students of the Master of Arts in Defence and Security Studies graduated on Friday at Makerere University.
The Masters of Arts in Defence and Security Studies was introduced in 2015 following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Makerere University and the Ministry of Defence in 2014 with the aim of professionalizing the army. The programme is offered to UPDF Officers and is taught by members of staff from the Department of Political and Public Administration, Makerere University.
The programme is aimed at reinforcing the capacity of soldiers in the region to among other issues tackle the ever growing threat of terror.
The graduands also serving army officers are; Esiaru Franco, Baguma Alikira Fred, Kajjubi Fred, Kasimbazi Kanyima John Francis, Lengusuranga Fabian Letais, Lwagaba James, Mbidde Abubakar, Mwamunyange Catherine Vanessa, Mwebaze Harriet, Nangamba Ronald, Nyonyi Godfrey Renutus, Owamagyezi Gilbert, Sichei Naibei Anthony and Wamunddu Cassette Ignatius.
Their graduation ceremony was attended by senior army officers namely; Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti, the Chairman of the General Court Martial; Brig Jim Wills Byarugaba, UPDF Chief of Training and Recruitment and Col. Steven Atukwase, the Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Defence and Security Studies Programme at the Senior Command and Staff College, KIMAKA.
