President Museveni has declared that he will personally lead the struggle against illegal land evictions.
Museveni made the promise to ‘deal with land grabbers the way he dealt with rebels’ while delivering his end of year massage to Ugandans on New Year’s in Rwakitura.
“Land evictions in 2019 must stop, because I am going to directly head this struggle because most of the people being evicted are either the elders I led in Resistance Wars or their descendants,” said Museveni.
“We are liaising with the Chief Justice and my lawyers will use all legal means to defend our comrades in the struggle or their descendants,” Museveni said l, adding that landlords must know that ‘win-win’ is the only way everyone on land will benefit.
Museveni’s concern on illegal land evictions comes shortly after religious leaders condemned the vice during Christmas church services.
For example; Bishop of Namirembe Diocese Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira described land grabbing and corruption as new type cancer spread by Judiciary and police.
Also, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala Cyprian Kizito Lwanga during his sermon on Christmas at Rubaga Cathedral not only urged Christians to stop stealing land from their fellow Christians, but he also called upon government to come out and defend the less privileged whose land is taken by rich and greedy.
On New Years Eve, President Museveni also listed other problems that Uganda must eradicate in 2019. These included Youth development and Employment, Crime, Political discipline, Regional integration, Corruption, Political leaders as examples in wealth creation and irrigation.
