Trending on Sunday, December 30 is journalist Andrew Mwenda’s response to President Museveni’s ‘thank you’ message to Quiin Abenakyo.
Abenakyo is the reigning Miss World – Africa.
Upon return from Sanya, China mid December, where she was crowned Africa’s most beautiful woman, Abenakyo met President Museveni at State House, Entebbe. The President then, advised Abenakyo to ‘go natural, and lose her Indian hair.’
On Saturday, the President and First Lady hosted Abenakyo and her entourage to a state dinner at Rwakitura, where he commended her for abandoning weaves for her natural hair.
The President on Sunday, tweeted ‘when we met in Entebbe, I advised Abenakyo to keep her hair natural. I am glad she heeded my advice and reasserted her African identity. God beautifully created Africans there is no need to add or subtract anything.’
But vocal Mwenda, fresh out of comparing Bobi Wine to Hitler, hit back, saying the President should have used Lusoga, to address Abenakyo.
“If we have to keep up with our African identity, why didn’t you send this tweet in Runyankole, Lusoga or Swahili?” Mwenda, a government propagandist asked.
“How is your use of English in this Tweet different from her use of mzungu hairstyle? Isn’t use of a foreign language more culturally damaging than using a foreign hairstyle?”
We await government response.
