Dr. Stella Nyanzi is among the 45 senior academic staff that have been fired by Makerere University.
The University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has revealed that majority of the fired academicians were staff who had absconded from duty for over five years, while others were involved in sexual harassment cases.
In October this year, Uganda’s oldest university was ordered to reinstate the suspended research fellow back to her office.
The staff appeals tribunal ordered the university to pay Nyanzi her outstanding emoluments within ten working days after the ruling. Delivering the ruling, the tribunal chairperson George Omunyokol faulted the appointments board for failing to conduct Nyanzi’s disciplinary hearings within the statutory four weeks after suspension. Nyanzi was suspended on March 31, 2017 over misconduct.
However, the institution failed to abide by the order until today when it decided to send the controversial activist packing.
Nyanzi is currently on remand in Luzira Prison on charges of charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication against President Yoweri Museveni.
Prosecution alleges that on September 19, 2018 Nyanzi willfully and repeatedly used electronic communication to post messages offensive in nature via Facebook transmitted over the internet to disturb or attempted to disturb the peace, quiet or right of privacy of President Yoweri Museveni with no purpose of legitimate communication.
