Officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Auditor General’s office and Uganda Police have raided the Lands office of Wakiso District Headquarters following allegations of dubious land transactions.
Officials led by Lt. Col Edith Nakalema on Thursday morning stormed the lands office to investigate a number of corruption claims that have so far been reported since the launch of the unit.
This follows a number of complaints concerning how the land transactions are conducted at the centre and the office had been transformed into a bill centre where a number of brokers have actually made it difficult for a normal transaction to happen without them getting involved.
“Officers at the office have been allegedly conniving with some people to under declare the value of land thus denying government revenue that could have been raised in stamp fees during transactions,” a source said.
So far six land officials, including the head of the ministry of lands zonal offices, Johnson Mukaaga have been handcuffed and detained at Wakiso District offices.
Early this month, during the International Anti Corruption Day ceremony at Kololo Airstrip, President Yoweri Museveni launched the Anti-Corruption Unit to boost the fight against the vice.
The President appointed Nakalema as the unit leader.
“People will be reporting to Nakalema who’ll be reporting to me, however, be careful of the people you bring, don’t be infiltrated by weevils,” he told Nakalema.
