President Museveni is set to give out 300 mailo land titles to bibanja holders in Nakaseke district Semuto sub county.
While addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre on Thursday, Lands, Housing and Urban Development minister Betty Amongi said this is the only fundamental way to resolve land questions in both Buganda and Bunyoro regions.
“This is a historical event of resolving running problems on land. Land injustices have caused people to lose their land but this process is to help us in many,” said Amongi.
The 300 mailo land titles are to be given to bibanja owners occupying land block 260 plot 383 and plot 385 measuring 41,175 hectares and 201.6 hectares respectively, covering three villages; Kibubu, Kitoto and Kirema in Semuto Sub-county Nakaseke district.
According to Amongi, once these titles are handed over to the bibanja holders in one of the three villages, they will have assumed ownership of their land.
“The bibanja holders who will receive their land titles on Saturday, December 15 will no longer be called tenants by occupancy but Mailo land owners or registered proprietors,” said Amongi.
According to Uganda Land Commission chairperson Baguma Isoke, government purchased this land from the land owner Namunkekera at Shs2.5bn which was paid in three installments over three years.
“Government is also processing land titles for bibanja holders in Kayunga districts in Kitibwa and Kayonza sub county. We are doing this as a solution to stop unlawful land evictions,” said Isoke.
The ceremony will take place at Kirema Church of Uganda Primary School.
