The body guard and driver of Justine Bagyenda have on Thursday been arrested and handed over to the Parliamentary Police, Criminal Investigation department after they lied under oath.
Bagyenda, the former Director of Supervision for Commercial banks at Bank of Uganda, is reportedly out of the country.
The Abdu Kutuntu-led Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) ordered that the two, Juliet Adikolet and Job Turyahabwe be arrested, together with Beatrice Kyambadde, a security assistant and Charles Omoro, Bagyenda.
Cosase is investigating circumstances under which Bank of Uganda sold off seven banks has as well as find out how classifeied information was sneaked out by Bagyenda with the help of the four aides.
On Thursday, Adikolet and Turyahabwe were grilled by the committee to narrate the movements they made on the day they carried vital documents out of the central bank. Their accounts however, were shaky, thus the arrest.
According to Turyahabwe, they travelled straight from the central bank to Entebbe International Airport yet a car tracking device showed that the trio made a stopover in Bugolobi.
Meanwhile, Bagyenda’s request to appear before Cosase on Monday, December 3 has been granted.
Bagyenda was supposed to appear before the committee on Thursday after snubbing two other meetings. A warrant for her arrest was due to be issued but Katuntu said he had received a letter from the former director requesting for more time to return.
“Her second request has been granted. We do not need to use any more of our power on Bagyenda,” Katuntu said on Thursday. “We have given her until Monday, December 3, 10am.”
