Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a pilot Traffic Control Centre in Kampala. The centre, launched on Monday by KCCA Executive Director Jeniffer Musisi, shall be used to monitor traffic at the 12 out of 24 signalised junctions through the surveillance cameras.
Ms Musisi also thanked the World Bank, under the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project, the infrastructure support of the ministry of ICT through NITA-U and C-Square Ltd , who all worked hand in hand with the Uganda Police specially the traffic and safety directorate to finance the project.
The signalised junctions Kabira 1, Kabira 2, Kira Road Police junction, Fairway junction, Bwaise Junction, Junjju road, Makerere main gate, Gadafi Road, Kyadondo road, Sir Apollo Kaggwa road, Nakulabye Junction, and Bukesa Mengo SS.
The system, according to the outgoing ED, shall also be used to remotely monitor and manage the performance of the traffic network.
“The system is ready to monitor the radio communication of the field activities for the traffic wardens, ambulance, enforcement staff and security personnel,” Musisi added.
It is on this note that Musisi promised 40 more cameras to be deployed and connected on the fiber network in addition to the recently installed police cameras.
She explained that KCCA is planning to scale up this project with 75 more signalised and connected junctions in the next four years which will be uploaded on KCCA’s website.
Over the last seven years, traffic congestion is one of the key issues KCCA has been trying to address. One of the traffic congestion strategies under implementation is signalising junctions in addition to widening roads, creating walk ways, tarmacking connecting roads among others.
