Uganda is set to participate in a beauty contest of persons with Albinism in East Africa due November 30.
According to Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUP) Board chairperson Peter Ogik, this is the first ever beauty contest of persons with Albinism in East Africa.
“Uganda will be represented by five females and five Males. We are doing this to create awareness to the world that they are also normal people, they can be beautiful and can be loved,” Ogik told Watchdog on Monday at Parliament. The contest will be held in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to Ogik, all East African countries are to participate in this beauty contest with the main agenda of empowering people with albinism and boast their confidence and self-esteem to live in the free community and country and enjoy equal opportunities.
Coral Auma one of the contestants said,“This is my only hope to show people that we are not different from them. We are also beautiful and most of us have qualifications to work as other people but we have always been rejected. So this is my hope now.”
Ogik said the backbone of this project is to help persons with Albinism to realise that life has a purpose.
“We have always been rejected in every society, some say we are ghosts other people kill us for rituals but now it’s time we tell the world that we can also participate in beauty contest,” said Ogik.
Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament flagged off team on Monday. The beauty pageant is sponsored by Albinism Society of Kenya.
