President Museveni has blamed the planning department of Ministry of Health for the small numbers of professional doctors in Uganda.
“I feel very embarrassed when I hear Minister of Health celebrating that we have 7,000 doctors, with the population of over 40m people, doctors’ number is very embarrassing. Is the planning department in ministry of Health really studying the global health statistics?” President Museveni asked.
He was addressing doctors at Imperial Royale Hote, Kampala on Saturday.
Museveni challenged medical teachers and Ministry of Health that, right now Uganda needs over 80,000 doctors referring to the global international statistics 1 doctor must treat about 500 patients.
Museveni advised them never to talk about the numbers of doctors in his presence.
“We need 80,000 doctors. Although we are not doing well we need many medical doctors than these you talk about,” added Museveni.
At the same function, the President said he tried to open new medical universities but Makerere University was always against him.
