Local council leaders have been called upon to fulfill their obligations diligently and serve all people regardless of their political or religious affiliations if they are to improve service delivery in the communities.
Speaking to village and parish chairpersons of Ihunga Sub-county Kajara county Ntungamo district after their swearing in on Friday, the Ntungamo District Woman MP Hon Beatrice Rwakimaari reminded them that a leader once elected represented all people whether they supported them or not.
Hon Rwakimaari noted that village and parish chairpersons are the basic and foundation of democracy saying that government hinges on local council leaders therefore they are paramount in implementing governments programmes.
She argued them to unite people and work together for the development of their areas of jurisdiction.
The sub county chairperson, Jackson Rubagyera Jackson commended the work being done by local leaders across the country, but appealed to Parliamentarians to consider increasing the emoluments and allowances of councillors, sub county chairpersons and village chairperson for effective service delivery.
Rubagyere noted that sub county councillors should take at least Shs150,000 from Shs24,000 per sitting, village chairpersons from Shs10,000 to Shs50,000 and sub county chairperson from Shs378,000 to Shs500,000 per month among others.
The Ihunga sub county chief Coleta Ainomugisha hailed the government and Electoral Commission for organising the local council elections which will enable them to execute their duties smoothly with the help of local leaders.
Chief Coleta asked all village leaders to play their roles by supervising and monitoring the government programs and report any errant officers who are failing their duties in their areas.
All 45 villages and three parish chairpersons were given new stamps and books for record keeping.
Other speakers were Allen Asiimwe, the deputy Kagarama town council chairperson who gave them a Ream of papers and Kagarama Police post OC Ivan Kawooya.
