A total of 145 military police personnel including ten officers(10) and thirteen(13) female combatants have today 19 October 2018 been passed out after completing a three weeks long prisoner handling and management course at Luzira Prisons Academy and Training school (PATS) Kampala.

The pass out ceremony at the Prison’s academy premises was presided over by the Regional Prison Commander Kampala extra Commissioner Tumwebaze who represented the Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija. The course was tailored around professional handling and management of prisoners in relation to the demands of the world.

Military police(MP) of UPDF is the custodian of military unlawful offenders. Being custodians of the military detention facilities it was imperative for military police handlers to be equipped and imparted with skills and tactics of handling and managing inmates from Uganda Prison Service leadership.

Commissioner Tumwebaze who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony congratulated the newly passed out MP soldiers upon successful completion of the course. ” it was a hands on course and more tangible, where by role plays and demonstrations were used to impart both theoretical and practical skills to trainees”, said Tumwebaze

Commissioner Tumwebaze further urged the passed out soldiers trainees to walk the talk and perform diligently in their duties. He noted that Military police has been fully equipped with skills in handling and managing of prisoners and therefore the course’s objective was achieved.

The Chief of Training and Recruitment (CTR) in UPDF Brigadier Jim Wills Byarugaba, appreciated Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Byabasaija for enabling the prisons academy to train UPDF military police. He noted that information and knowledge sharing between security agencies is key given the changing crime trends worldwide. He called on security agencies to maintain the already existing cordial relationship.

Brigadier Byarugaba commended the commandant military police Colonel William Bainomugisha’s efforts in having military police personnel train in prisoner handling and management. He noted that the training will give Uganda a good image in prisoners handling and management world over.

The commandant military police Colonel William N Bainomugisha thanked the commandant prisons academy Senior superintendent of Prisons (SSP) Brenda Sana for her efforts rendered in carrying out the course.

The three weeks course covered Human rights, rehabilitation and reintegration, prisoner’s contact to outside world.
