Over 10 tonnes of plastic bottles and other such materials have been collected within one month in Kabale Municipality. The move is aimed at turning Kabale into a tourism city and was launched on September 1, 2018 in Mwanjari, Kabale municipality. Bottle collectors are paid Shs250 per kilogram collected.
According to Mr Peter Kakuru, the initiator of the project, the collected bottles will soon be transport to Kampala and sold to recycling plants.
“On average we collect about 400 kilograms of plastics every day from our clients,” he told Watchdog Uganda on Wednesday afternoon at the plastics collection center in Mwanjari, Kabale town .
So far, approximately Shs2.7 million has been spent on buying plastics.
Mr Kakuru noted that women are the ones that are mostly involved in the collecting and selling of the plastics.
The campaign is supported by Coca-Cola, Global Livingstone Institute and Entusi Resort.
