The army has come out to clear the air after armed thugs were arrested in an operation in Busiza on Saturday. According to Lt. Col. Del Akiki, the UPDF deputy spokesman, an assortment of both Military and Police stores were recovered from the suspects including an AK 47 Number UG-POL 46016976-15257 belonging to Uganda Police Forces with 29 rounds.
Also, two of the arrested suspects were no longer with the army while one of the other two was an active police officer.
“During the operation, the following suspects were apprehended; ROV 11540 Lt Tobias Turyabaruhanga, a retired UPDF officer and RA/209126 Lance Corporal Muzoora Benjamin,a UPDF deserter,” Col. Akiki said on Sunday morning. Turyabaruhanga, literally translated to mean ‘we are for God in the local Runyankole dialect is a resident of Entebbe.
Also arrested were ASP Bishaka Godson, an OC of Kikumbi Police Stationin Najjanankumbi and Mutagi Gerald, a resident of Entebbe.
“As soon as investigations are completed, the suspects shall be produced before courts of law for eventual prosecution,” Col. Akiki promised.
The broad day light operation on Saturday was carried out by Internal Security Organization (ISO).
“Security agencies shall continue to work together in an effort of keeping the country safe and free for the business community and all Ugandans in general,” Col. Akiki said, adding that any member of the armed forces whether retired, deserter or serving, that involves himself or herself in such acts commits a grave offence that attracts a maximum punishment as stipulated in our laws.
“We condemn such actions by individuals and reiterate our commitment to weed out anyone who veers off the strict code of conduct of our institutions.”
