Police has advised Kampala Minister Beti Kamya to seek their help in the wake of threatening letters that have ‘wildly’ circulated around the city. The letters allegedly call for her murder, along with a host of other high ranking government officials.
Although Watchdog has not seen these letters, Deputy Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango said, “Recently police spokesman Emilian Kayima issued a statement that there were terrorists who are targeting Members of Parliament, Ministers and other diplomatic figures in the country. So we are aware of these characters. However, as Police we call upon minister Kamya to go and report to Police. I understand she knows what do.”
Onyango was speaking to journalists on Thursday at Police headquarters, Naguru, in a hastily organised press conference.
Earlier in the day, Ms Kamya expressed fear for her life due to threatening letters that feature her name on the list of those to be assassinated.
“I am also aware of the letters having my name among those to be murdered. However, I am not so sure what these people want,” she told journalists at her office. “Probably if they would be strong enough to face me and tell me my wrongs. May be, you never know we would come to a agreement but as a human being this also scares my life.”
Ms Kamya said she had already lost her father and her husband too, so she may not worried about death.
“However, the threats are beyond humane,” she said.
But Onyango called on minister to go and file a statement at Police so that they get a starting point of investigations on who is behind this practice.
In the same vein, Police also cautioned business community especially those living in Kampala Metropolitan areas about letters allegedly written and circulated by the ground calling themselves ‘People’s Agency’. The members of the group allegedly kidnap to exhort.
These new letters carry intimidation massages demanding for payment of money in foreign currency ranging from USD30,000-USD45000 which is supposed to be paid within three months as contribution towards the activities of criminal gangs.
Payment is by the bitcoin.
“We would like to assure the business community and all peace loving Ugandans that such criminality of this group is being investigated and all those found under this practice will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” noted Onyango.
Some of the members of the People’s Agency, according to Onyango, are on the watch list of the police and are being followed.
Without revealing their identities, Onyango said CID has so far arrested two suspecting.
Also bodaboda cyclists have been warned to desist from carrying such letters as they will likely become accomplices in the crime.
