The murder of Muslim clerics, prosecutor Joan Kagezi, Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Major Kiggundu were the ultimate reason why a multi billion shillings CCTV surveillance project was installed.
The revelation was made by President Museveni while commissioning the system at Natete Police Station on Independence Day.
According to President Museveni, because there was nobody watching while all these killings happening, there was a need for cameras. This is mainly because most of Ugandans in city are not alert.
“Killers have always taken advantage of lack of alertness to murder others, but the cameras are now in place to help fight insecurity,” he told journalists at the National Command and Control Center of the CCTV Camera project.

President noted that his government has fought with four aims; Defending the population against terrorists, defending roads from landmines, defending themselves and hunting the enemies of the country and confirmed that CCTV project is the simplest security problem that his government has ever solved.
About 3,322 cameras are to be installed in Kampala Metropolitan between June 2018 to July 2019. Already, 359 cameras have been installed. So far 156 km have been covered but the target is covering 1300km. The cameras cover 5km, either moving in 360 degree direction or fixed in one direction.
One hundred fifty cameras have been installed to monitor Natete, Lungujja, Old Kampala, Rubaga, Kabowa, Mutundwe and Kawaala
The 5,552 CCTV cameras needed for nationwide system were delivered by Chinese company Huawei.
In May, Parliament passed Shs60bn as a supplementary budget to finance the first phase of camera installations.
This after President Museveni ordered finance minister to release funds for buying CCTV cameras following the assassination of AIGP Kaweesa.
