The Busoga tourism minister Hellen Namutamba has advised girls to avoid early marriages, teenage pregnancies and also recoil from early multiple sex engagement as a way of avoiding fistula.
Ms Hellen Namutamba also advised girls to look up to women like her, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaaga or even their own personal models in order to focus more on the future.
She was speaking at a fistula awareness campaign supported by Women at Work International (WAWI) in Jinja municipality this week.
Namutamba also pledged to fight fistula out of Busoga kingdom and called upon Kyabazinga Gabula Nadiope to join in the struggle.
“Older women should always deliver from health facilities to avoid childbirth related complications that may lead to fistula,” she urged.
At the same event, veteran artiste and chief executive officer WAWI,  Halima Namakula tasked teachers to teach about fistula in schools because it’s a shame that scholars don’t know anything about it.
Data from Engender Health, a reproductive health organization, shows that western Uganda has the highest cases of fistula at 5.5 per cent, followed by northern and Busoga regions at three percent each
