The University student leaders who had earlier planned a ‘Yellow Demonstration’ on Tuesday next week have called it off after meeting the NRM party leadership led by the Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba on Friday.

50 student leaders led by their Chairperson Avora Kennedy (Kyambogo University), the Speaker Kagurusi Derrick (Makerere University) and their Coordinator Ngabirano Joseph Kasekende met the party leaders at the NRM headquarters in Kampala. The association has over one million membership countrywide. The meeting was also attended and addressed by the Deputy National Treasurer Dr. Kenneth Omona.

The students presented several demands that included a need for a coordination desk, information sharing, training opportunities and clear political recognition of institutions among others.

In her reaction, Secretary General Lumumba pledged total support towards the NRM University students and directed that Boniface Okot currently working as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary General coordinates their activities under the overall supervision of Dr.  Omona.

She also pledged to have students’ representatives for training opportunities and workshops on top of arranging leadership retreats in Kyankwanzi. She however explained that the Secretariat was considering presenting proposals to CEC for the party constitutional amendment for proper accomodation of the institutions and diaspora organs.

SG Lumumba further said the party will consider setting up NRM Chapter offices in various Universities for easy coordination of party activities.

Speaking on behalf of the students leadership, their Association Speaker Kagurusi said ‘we are satisfied with your motherly guidance and explanation’.

‘The Yellow Tuesday demonstration is no more’. The students pledged to convey the acquired messages to other students within their respective institutions.

Addressing the same meeting, Dr. Omona commended the youth for identifying themselves with NRM which he said was driven by very clear ideological conviction not sentiments.

He said the party treasures the young people and will continue relating with them maximally. Also present was  Milton Muwuma, the Executive Assistant to the Secretary General and coordinator of the meeting.
