The Minister of education and sports who is also First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni has challenged local governments to invest in tree planting as the only way to cartel drought and protect environment in the country.
Minister Janet Museveni asked political leaders at district level to start buying tree seedlings and give them to people free of charge in order to plant trees all over the bare hills in Ruhaama county Ntungamo district.
She made remarks on Saturday while presiding over the great grand fundraising of Ruhaama secondary school aimed at reviving the dilapidated structures of the school which will cost over 1billion shillings.
The fundraising drive was held at school’s premises in Ruhaama trading centre, Ruhaama county Ntungamo district.
‘’You political leaders should provide trees to the public such that they can plant all these bare hills because when these hills are not planted with trees, we may face drought’’ She said.
Minister Janet Museveni noted that as the government is emphasizing on food security and productivity, people will not improve food security when they faced with drought due to climate change.
She hailed the Bishop of South Ankole Diocese Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe for supporting the campaign of encouraging parents to always pack food for their children and fight against poverty at household level.
She said that the ministry of education and sports is implementing the government program of concentrating first only two secondary schools per district rather than focusing on many schools in order to improve the structural buildings among requirements.
‘’School stakeholders should build and own their schools which are affordable and durable rather than expensive ones, ‘’ Ms Museveni.
President Museveni and Janet contributed shs30m and shs20m respectively and she auctioned a cow and fetched shs40m.
However, the Ruhaama County MP Kahima Moses Mugabe blamed the disservice in Ruhaama County to its big size saying that it is too big to manage.
Kahima noted that Ruhaam County should be split into two counties for the services to reach all people at grass root.
‘’ Mama I beg you to tell the president that the county is too big for me who is just new in politics so let before next general elections in 2021 be divided such that we can manage it properly,’’ MP Kahima.
The headteacher Ruhaama SS Tumutoreine Nicholas alias Qudi lauded the teamwork amongst the staff, students and parents which has enabled the school to perform well at ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels a year after year.
Over shs100m were raised towards construction of 4 class rooms, laboratory, Library and dormitories.
