Following a vigorous bickering within Uganda’s main opposition political party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Oxfam Executive Director Winnie Byanyima has called upon Dr. Kizza Besigye and Mugisha Muntu to work together if they are to challenge NRM government.
In a tweet, Byanyima who is also Besigye’s wife said Uganda needs a united and strong opposition in order to challenge President Museveni and his government.
“No! Parliament is an important platform where laws are made & public budgets are allocated. Our elected leaders have a critical role 2 play in deepening democracy & defending human rights. Uganda needs a united, strong opposition 2 challenge NRM govt.Besigye, Muntu come together!” said Byanyima.
Byanyima’s comment comes at a time when FDC is on a verge of splitting due to indifferences among party officials.
Recently, Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat sacked all Muntu allies from the opposition leadership in parliament.
As a result of that reorder, first party president and founder, Besigye urged Ugandans on Thursday in Masaka never to bother about the newly appointed opposition leaders under the stewardship of MP Betty Aol Ochan, Leader of Opposition (LoP).
According to Besigye, Uganda can only be liberated by masses and not opposition MPs in Parliament, calling on the general public to wake up and liberate their own country.
He also says such changes have happened in the past years.
And while the changes have caused division within the party members and majority of MPs vowing to depart, to be with the former party President Gen. Mugisha Muntu, the Najjanakumbi leadership is unbothered.
