The Secretary General Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Hon. Ramadhan Mugalu has lauded His Excellency the President of Uganda Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for prioritising peace and security in the country.
Honourable Mugalu was addressing journalists during a UMSC monthly Press briefing that was held today at the UMSC Headquarters Old Kampala.
“I thank the government of Uganda and the Commander in Chief Gen. Y.K Museveni for the prevailing peace in our country” Hon. Mugalu said.
The Secretary general also appealed to the government to unconditionally release those Muslims who are languishing in various prisons without clear charges.
He however expressed concern over continued pockets of criminality, citing news reports that a young girl was recently killed and the body dumped in Makerere University.
Speaking about the prevailing Muslim unity in Uganda, Hon. Mugalu commended Shk. Obed Kamulegeya (Shk. Mukulu) and Prince Kassim Nakibinge respectively for their re-conciliatory remarks towards UMSC, noting that this is a welcome gesture.
“As Muslims, we don’t have to disturb the President of Uganda to unite us. We can do it amongst ourselves as long as we have the will, the Secretary General said noting that UMSC is for all Muslims in Uganda.
On the issue of Muslim land, the Secretary general said there are selfish individuals who have formed private companies, with the intention to grab UMSC land, citing examples of Nateete, Kyazanga, Kiwatule, Luwero and Bushenyi among others.
He called upon the government Registrar of Lands to always consult UMSC before registering Muslim properties.
He also spoke about the progress being made under the UMSC department of education noting that UMSC has secured over 200 scholarships both within and outside Uganda, covering studies in both arts and sciences at different education levels.
“We are also partnering with international agencies like UNICEF and the government of Uganda in training of care givers. This year, 484 are gradiating from 214 schools country wide” Hon. Mugalu said.
The UMSC Secretary for Hijja and UMRA Shk. Ali Juma Shiwuyo also briefed the media about this year’s Pilgrimage program.
The UMSC monthly Press briefing is aimed at updating and guiding Muslims in particular and the public in general on current affairs.
