Kyadondo East member of parliament Robert Kyagulanyi has expressed dismay that leading opposition figure in Uganda Dr Kizza Besigye turned away from Bugiri Municipality candidate Asuman Basalirwa, who had been in the trenches with him all along.
Kyagulanyi who is better known by his alias Bobi Wine said while campaigning for Basalirwa in Bugiri on Wednesday that it is leaders of substance who can make a difference in the battle to liberate Uganda. He said Basalirwa, the president of Jeema party is such a leader.
Bugiri has divided the opposition troops between Basalirwa and FDC’s Eunice Namatende who is backed by Besigye and part of FDC. Namatende who calls herself ‘manda mapya’ is said to enjoy massive support in Bugiri.
Basalirwa however cut a re-conciliatory tone at the rally held at Ndifakulya in Bugiri town. He asked his supporters to resist conflicts with his competitor. Basalirwa faces off with John Frances Okecho (NRM), Eunice Namatende (FDC) and Hajji Siraji Lyavala (independent).
Bobi Wine said Parliament at this point in time does not need political parties or religious beliefs but people who can take strong positions and honest enough to stay on the right path.
He wondered how Besigye and other Forum for Democratic Change activists abandoned Basalirwa yet he has been fighting with them in places like Jinja and Rukungiri, where they delivered victories because they were united. He however compared Basalirwa to himself when he defied senior opposition leaders to stand as an independent in Kyadondo. Besigye supported the official FDC candidate Apolo Kantinti, who Bobi Wine trounced decisively.
