KAMPALA, June 13 (Xinhua)–
The deputy secretary general of Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) has described China as a genuine friend of Africa with genuine intentions of helping the continent to develop.
Richard Todwong who is a member of the ruling party that has been in power for than 30 years said the Chinese have continued to give African countries more Grants than aid and “have supported infrastructural development in many African Countries”.
“We believe that with these gestures from China, Africa will grow faster than before,” he told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday.
Todwong said unlike other western countries who used religion to polarize Africa, China was focused on the economic development of the continent.
“We hope and pray that they don’t change like how the imperialist did when they used religion to polarize Africa and later total colonialism as inevitable,” he said.
China has funded tens of infrastructural projects in Uganda including among others the Karuma and Isimba dam projects, which are expected to boost the country’s power capacity by more than 600MW.
The other mega project sponsored by China in Uganda is the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, the first of its kind in Uganda.
The expressway that leads from the country’s capital to the airport has cut traffic time by more than two hours.
The chairman of China’s People’s Political Consultative Conference, HE Wang Yang, together with the chairman of NRM and president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni will on Friday officially open the expressway.
“We hope all these is not to harm twist African Countries to open up totally to China’s exports and donate our natural resources. Otherwise as it is for now, we thank them,” Todwong said. Enditem
