“The nurses paid Shs210, 000 to Middle East of which Shs50, 000 was a non refundable registration fee to the company and the remaining Shs160, 000 was for other medical check up. So if there is any nurse who wants their monies back, they should come with a bank receipt and we refund their Shs160, 000 back”
Those were the opening remarks of Gordon Mugyenyi, the managing director for Middle East Consultants Limited in a press conference that took place at Muyenga to clarify on the alleged nurse feud against the travel company.
Mugyenyi said that it is true that the nurses enrolled with Middle East in a bid to go and work as nurses at the Benghazi Medical Center in Libya and in May 2017, 1000 people were approved by the ministry of Gender Labor and social development.
On a sad not after finalizing all the processes , Middle East Consultants was advised by the government not to go ahead with the Benghazi deal for nurses despite having gone through the hustle of going to Libya to meet the stakeholders .
“After being stopped by the government from taking these nurses, we called all the people who applied and projected everything that was going on,” said Mugyenyi.
He went ahead to say that Middle East is a company that works under the laws of Uganda and cannot at any point do anything minus following the government procedures.
Mugyenyi added that they have refunded over 80% of the paid money as long as someone came with a bank slip and 40% of the nurses decided to shift to other jobs following the flop of the nursing jobs and they have already moved abroad for work.
On this note, Mugyenyi advised the nurses lawyer Isaac Semakadde to revise the law and advise his clients in the best way possible.
“in fact I wonder how a lawyer of his caliber could write to us on behalf of his clients and then asks to meet us privately, only to discover that he wanted Shs300m, a fee that we shall never give to him” revealed Mugyenyi.
The said nurses had to go to Libya in a period of nine months from the time of signing the contracts; however government under the ministry of Gender Labor and social development managed to council the deal after realizing that Libya was not a safe country to work in.
