Last week, Botswana’s Broadhurst Court Magistrate Tonoki extended the remand of former Ugandan Member of Parliament (MP) Tony Nsubuga Kipoi, to give the prosecution more time to conduct their investigations.
39-year-old Kipoi, from the Manafwa district in the east of Uganda, faces four counts of obtaining by false pretences.
The suspect, who spent a short stint in a Ugandan prison accused of treason back in 2012, allegedly swindled his victims out of more than P290, 000 by posing as a traditional doctor.
Court heard that between September last year and the 20th of January 2018 at Molepolole village, Kipoi, fraudulently obtained P109, 000 from one Silvia Nonofo Mmutlwane, who works as a nurse at Bokaa clinic.
He is said to have masqueraded as a ‘witch doctor’ promising Mmutlwane he would cast a spell to ensure she gets married soon.
The former Bubulo West MP is also accused of selling one Thabea Kebalese Modisapoo a ‘magic wallet’ for P3, 000, which he claimed was enchanted and would increase Modisapoo’s money.
Back in May 2017, Kipoi is further accused of deceitfully obtaining P175, 000 from one Boitshoko Moloi a teacher at Hatsalatladi, by claiming he could cast a spell to multiply Moloi‘s money.
Finally, on the 1st of February this year in Mogoditshane, Kipoi, with the intent to defraud, obtained P7, 000 from one Tshepo Mogomotsi by promising to cast a spell to guarantee the victim ‘gets employed quickly’.
State Prosecutor Mogakolodi Pakati pleaded with court not to grant the accused bail and to give officers more time to carry out their investigations.
Pakati pointed out that Kipoi was only arrested last week and the police suspect there are more people he swindled.
Kipoi will next appear in court on the 26th of February for mention.
The Ugandan is no stranger to controversy and has been fingered in drug trafficking and theft cases in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
