Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has told parliament that it’s ready to operate independently thus tasking the legislative assembly to push technocrats in the Education Ministry to attain status.
Appearing before the Committee on Education on Wednesday, MUBS Principal Wasswa Balunywa informed legislators that the school has all that it takes to attain a university status but it has been hindered severally.
Balunywa said apart from Makerere and Kyambogo Universities, there is no other university that is bigger than them, and wondered why they still have to rely on Makerere.
MUBS has been pushing government to accord it autonomy from Makerere University, its mother institution so that it could be run as a separate university.
However, the move has been met with resistance from Makerere University, breading constant conflicts.
Balunywa told the MPs that a process to have the school turned into the university was commenced last year under orders by the Minister of Education, Janet Museveni.
“The process commenced at the National Council for High Education who made a visitation to the School and wrote a report advising the Ministry to set up a task force to initiate the gazetting of MUBs into a University, but for now months the process hasn’t resumed,”
