Makerere university Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has revealed plans to build a new three star hotel at the current Makerere university guest house, apartments in Makindye and hostels at the university main campus to curb the lack of residences at the university.
Addressing the monthly press briefing at the university main building on Friday, 22nd December 2017, Nawangwe said during the property investor conference, they presented five initial projects to national regional and international property development stakeholders in which they singled out the conference centre, five star hotel at the current university guesthouse, students center and apartments in Makindye and hostels at the main campus to cover the 34,000 number of students who reside outside the university.
Nawangwe said the university has 40,000 students and the current houses of residence accommodate only a maximum of 6,000 leaving the other 34,000 looking for where to reside though they would also like to reside on the campus. He added that they contacted the investors and received positive responses. He said that the plan will come through in six months to come.
In the presentation that followed, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance & Administration), Prof. William Bazeyo thanked all students slated to graduate during the 68th Graduation Ceremony in January 2018 for responding to the circular urging them to clear all outstanding balances with the University.
