A group of Civil Society Organizations have today condemned government for its continued civic and political repression in the country.
While addressing the media in Kampala, civil societies expressed concern that government has continued to curtail their rights and liberties through use of unlawful orders and disproportionate use of force.
The non-governmental organizations statement comes at a moment when some NGOs like ActionAid Uganda’s office premises are being besieged, searches conducted, bank accounts frozen and property confiscated for purported investigation.
“It is our considered view that this unfortunate conduct cannot be understood outside of the ongoing political discourse within the public and as such, the authorities implicated cannot hide behind their regulatory roles to pursue what is clearly a witch hunt of those who have expressed a view that is different from that of the ruling Establishment,”
The NGOs have said the current debate on proposed constitutional amendments which which have been roundly rejected across the country should not cause undue panic within the institutions of the state which are supposed to concern themselves only to the extent that their mandates permit or restrict them.
