MPs opposed to the controversial age limit bill led by the leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza have referred police’s order barring them from carrying out joint consultative meetings as ‘stupid’.
While addressing the media on Wednesday, Winnie Kiiza said that the police have no right to issue a political directive barring them from consulting masses on the removal of article 102(b) in a manner they wish.
“The order that no member of parliament should consult in another constituency apart from his or her constituency is unconstitutional, outrageous and laughable. We are not going to allow this order and we are going to continue with our consultations and programs as prior arranged,” Kiiza said.
In a letter dated October 16, Asuman Mugenyi, the police director of operations directed Regional Police Commanders, District Police Commanders and Officers in Charge of stations to ensure that MPs only consult in their constituencies. Mugenyi added that consultations must not include illegal demonstrations, illegal processions, inciting violence and use of hate campaigns that has of late characterized the age limit consultation meetings.
“Those MPs moving or intending to move in order to support counterparts or consult outside their constituencies must be stopped (repeat) must be stopped,” Mugenyi’s letter partly read.
