As the age limit debate intensifies, US Ambassador to Uganda Deborah R. Malac has issued a statement on police crackdown on age limit protesters.
According to Malac, US is concerned with the ongoing raids and arrests of Ugandans opposed to age limit removal and this is tarnishing Uganda’s image around the globe.
“We are disturbed by reports of raids on NGOs. Infringements on protected rights under Uganda’s Constitution will impede the country’s development,” She stated.
Malac has called upon government to guarantee all citizens freedom of speech, expression, and assembly, without fear of intimidation.
On Wednesday, offices of two NGOs namely; Action Aid and Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies were raided by police on allegations that they fund unlawful activities.
Today, a number of protesters especially Makerere University have been arrested ahead of tabling the age limit bill at parliament.
