Police have today increased their deployment at the Ugandan parliament to ease tensions as some opposition legislators increasingly promised to resort to violence tomorrow on Thursday.
Note should be taken that Thursday is the day that was scheduled by the NRM legislators to present a bill to parliament that seeks to scrap off article 102(a) of the Ugandan constitution which bars any person beyond the age of 75 to stand as a president.
Heavy police deployment at parliament followed yesterday’s incident where Ayivu county Mp Bernard Atiku narrowly strangled Arua municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga, blaming him for supporting the lifting of article 102(a), a move most opposition politicians claim undermines Uganda’s democracy.
Outside parliament, heavy presence of military police was heightened and these were seen carrying their AK47 riffles, ready for any action.
The deputy speaker of parliament Jocob Oulanya has defended the security beef up, saying that the security cannot seat back and relax when some legislators are increasingly threatening to go violent on Thursday.
He has urged MP’s to be mindful of their conduct at parliament as they represent their people from various constituencies.
