The demolition of Centenary Park has started today following President Yoweri Museveni and Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE)’s order commanding Sarah Kizito (owner) and husband Godfrey Nyakana to pave way for National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to carry out its projects on the land occupied by the park.
Last week, the Inspector General of Police(IGP) Kale Kayihura who was summoned by the committee to explain why police failed to respond to a request by KCCA to provide security while executing demolishing of illegal structures erected at the park, assured to work with Kampala Capital City Authority(KCCA) Executive Director Jennifer Musisi not to allow any kind of disruption when NWSC is laying sewers at Centenary Park premises.
NWSC engineer has said that “We are not going to cause traffic congestion on Jinja Road; we are going to use trench-less technology to dig below the tarmac. We are operating in our corridor as NWSC, so there will be no compensation. This has been our corridor way before independence”
