A court case filed by Legal Brains Trust Ltd challenging government decision to suspend use of social media on 18th Feb 2016 has been dismissed.
Justice Stephen Musota of the High Court division maintained that government’s decision wasn’t illegal, as social media isn’t the only media of communication.
Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) defended the decision, arguing suspending social media and Mobile money was necessary to secure against potential incitement of violence and criminality.
During the Presidential, Parliamentary elections in February 2016, UCC ordered the clampdown of the social media channels which include Facebook, WhatsApp and twitter as well as the Mobile financial services which was a violation of people’s rights.
