Kenya has launched a brand new railway running from the capital city Nairobi to the port city of Mombasa.
Kenya rail line was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Mombasa Terminal where he was one of the passengers on the inaugural four and a half hour journey from Mombasa to Nairobi in Madaraka Express.
“Today is a historic day as we board Madaraka express, we are nation proud of our achievement and focus on transformation. God bless Kenya,” Kenyatta said.
Kenya railway was built by the South Gauge Railways (SGR) Kenya with a loan from a Chinese bank.
The Kenya line is said to be the biggest infrastructure project since independence with Madaraka express which carries 1,260 passengers and twice as fast as the road trip between the two cities takes.
The Mombasa to Kenya line is the first leg of a brand new train network planned to link up the East African region.
