Police says Kamwenge Town Council mayor Geoffrey Byamukama is receiving regular checks at the upscale Nakasero hospital despite him being discharged from the facility.
Police spokesman Assan Kasingye told reporters on Monday that the mayor who was arrested in connection with the killing of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi and his aides, is daily returned to the upscale Nakasero hospital to treat wounds that were inflicted on him during his arrest. However he is still kept in a special facility at Nalufenya in Jinja district as he recovers. Police last week promised to keep returning the mayor for regular reviews until he can be fit to stand trial.
The aftermath of the gunning down of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi was on March 17, 2017 near his home in Kulambiro has brought about sweeping changes in the police including reshuffles in command as well as the manner suspects are managed.
Over 50 people have been arrested in connection with Kaweesi murder and other crimes, but about 20 have been presented before court for charging.
Police say Mr Byamukama was arrested by police from the Ministry of Lands office along Parliament Avenue in Kampala on April 5, after interrogating two suspects; Hassan Tumusiime and Abubaker Ntende.
However, Mr Kasingye has insisted that police does not condone torture of suspects and has vowed that the force was to punish anyone who was involved in the torture of Byamukama.
However police say the Kamwenge mayor was not badly tortured as he appears but wounds were made worse by the suspect’s host of ailments in the body including diabetes.
